4. Thai Postpartum Consultation, Bodywork and Traditional Care

Thai postpartum care can start from 5 days after delivery and span as long as 40 days. This is an outcall, home-service. According to Thai medicine, the first 40 days postpartum are considered the Yu Fai period, where the mother and baby should stay inside, warm, next to a fire to build back the heat element and essence that was lost from giving birth. It is said that if a mother doesn’t receive this level of care to rebuild this fire and nourish the mother, that her body is more susceptible to catching long-term illness and chronic disease.

These practices may involve Thai abdominal massage, hot clay pot massage, womb lifting, spot specific massage, oil massage, hot herbal compress massage, herbal steam sauna, herbal steam bath, vulva steam, vulva smoke, Thai belly binding, and Thai self-care, food and herbal medicine recommendations.

Thai massage for infants and children is offered for ages one month to five years old. Traditionally, this is taught to expectant parents prenatally to do this simple technique on their children for self-care.

Thai massage has many benefits for the health and development of infants and children including its ability to stimulate the nervous system, support development of the mind, body and spirit, improve digestion, prevent constipation, reduce anxiety and stress, reduce coughs, hiccups and nausea by stimulating the respiratory system, stimulate growth of the muscular system, prevent malformation, and reduce bedwetting.
